East Bay Family: Divas and Gentlemen Against Breast Cancer

We are East Bay Family, a diverse team of individuals ranging in ages from their 20s to 50s, representing the cities of San Leandro, Hayward, Union City, Fremont, Oakland, Richmond, and San Pablo. We began as the East Bay Divas for the 2003 San Francisco Breast Cancer 3Day and will continue our work in 2004 as East Bay Family. We plan to participate in Bay to Breakers, Race for the Cure, Swim a Mile for Breast Cancer, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and the 2004 3-Day.

The East Bay Divas was founded by Julie Calderon, a volunteer training walk leader for the Avon Walk and Breast Cancer 3-Day. Inspired by Divas Alice Kajiwara, Merlin Stewart, Patti Roderick, Diane McLain, Nichelle Blackwell, Lea Fresquez, and Michelle Anderson, Julie decided to register as a walker for her 2nd 3Day. The rest is East Bay history. The Divas grew to a team of 31 including 3 wonderful gentlemen: Lance McVay, Ahmet Aydogan, and Jerry "Ladybug" McCollum. At the 2003 3Day, 28 Divas surpassed their goal of raising $2000 and 25 of the Divas completed all three days of walking. As a team, the Divas have raised over $74,000!

Goals for 2004: Recruit 26 more male members, continue to diversify the team, walk/crew/volunteer/cheer for breast cancer events!

GO DIVAS! GO EAST BAY FAMILY!
